How to make a complaint about a councillor

Summary

Guide to compaining about a councillor including information about the Code of Conduct.

All councillors are required to comply with the Council’s Code of Conduct (PDF, 114kb). The Code sets out the standards of conduct that are required of councillors.  From 8 May 2008 the responsibility for considering complaints that a member may have breached the Code of Conduct is moving to the standards committees of local authorities.

What this means to you

After 8 May 2008 if you want to complain about the conduct of a member of Babergh District Council or a member of one of our parish or town councils, you must submit your complaint in writing to:

Chair of the assessment sub-committee
The Standards Committee
c/o The Monitoring Officer
Babergh District Council
Corks Lane
Hadleigh
Ipswich
IP7 6SJ

To ensure that the assessment sub-committee receives the information that it requires to consider your complaint, please complete a complaint form by clicking on the link Member Complaint Form (PDF, 109kb)

Your complaint and any request for confidentiality will be considered by the Assessment Sub-Committee using adopted criteria (PDF, 37kb).

Further information on the Standards Committee and its'  work is available from the Council's Monitoring Officer.
