How benefits are calculated

Both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are calculated by comparing your income with your "applicable amount" (this is a notional amount of a customer’s needs intended to cover basic living expenses and varies according to individual circumstances). The applicable amount is set by Central Government Regulations.

If you are in receipt of Income Support/Job Seekers Allowance or your income is below the applicable amount relevant to you then it is likely that you will qualify for 100% benefit on your rent eligible for benefit, and Council Tax.

If your income is above the applicable amount, then you will be liable to pay;

  • 65p per week rent for every £1 which your income exceeds the applicable amount.
  • 20p per week Council Tax for every £1 which your income exceeds the applicable amount.

Non-dependant deductions

If another adult (other than your partner) aged 18 years or over lives in your home, a deduction will be made from your benefit. The deductions vary according to the income of the non-dependant.

A leaflet listing the "Applicable Amounts" and the current rates of non-dependant deductions is available on request.
