Animal Establishment Licence Application Forms

Summary

The following animal establishments require licensing with Food and Safety Regulation Team. This is in order to regulate animal welfare standards.

Animal Boarding Establishments

Premises boarding either cats or dogs must be licensed with this Department. All new Catteries or Dog Boarding Establishments must be constructed to the requirements of The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Model Licence Conditions. Each licence is valid for one calendar year only.

Boarding other people's dogs in your home on a commercial basis also requires a licence.

Dangerous Wild Animals

Under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, you need a licence to keep many types of animals. These include some kinds of snakes, spiders, monkeys, and some dog and cat species. You need to have the licence before you get the animal. This licence is valid for two years and is only issued following a Vet's inspection of the premises.

If you keep animals in a zoo or pet shop, you will need a different kind of licence, please see below.

Dog Breeding Establishments

Any premises which carries on a business of breeding dogs for sale must be licensed by this Department. If 5 or more litters are produced in 1 year, then it is presumed a breeding establishment is being run. This licence is valid only until 31st December of the year in which it was issued.

Pet shops

Anyone selling animals as a business must be licensed to keep a Pet Shop. Again, this licence is valid only until 31st December of the year in which it was issued.

Riding Schools

A licence is required before anyone can let a horse, pony or donkey out for hire. A veterinary inspection is necessary before a licence can be issued. Once issued, a licence is valid for 12 calendar months.

Zoos

Any establishment where wild animals are kept for display to the public (other than in a circus or a pet shop) must first obtain a licence from the Local Authority.
