Car boot sales

Summary

Information about holding Car Boot Sales

If you are going to organise a Car Boot Sale (regarded in law as a temporary market), or allow one to be held on your land you are required by law to inform the Council.   There are 4 exceptions to this rule:-

  • The Car Boot Sale is to be held inside a building;
  • It is to be held on a public road; (see note below)
  • The proceeds from the sale of articles (not pitch fees) are to be used for charitable, social, sporting or political purposes
  • Less than 5 vehicles are involved.

Note:   If a car boot sale is to be held on a public road the consent of the County Council as Highways Authority may be required.

If you do need to tell the Council about a Car Boot Sale then you must do so in writing at least one month before the sale is due to be held.   You should write to:-

Head of Environmental Services
Corks Lane
Hadleigh
Ipswich
Suffolk
IP7 6SJ

If you hold a Car Boot Sale or allow one to be held on your land without giving the Council at least one months' notice you may be committing an offence for which you could be fined up to £1000

Please contact the Council for further information.
