Summary

Details of the Community Achievement Awards ceremony held on 3rd March 2010 at the Stoke by Nayland Club, including information and photographs of the winners

"It is very rewarding to hear of so many people going that extra mile to help others on a purely voluntary basis, especially in these times of economic difficulty. I was particularly impressed with the number of young people's projects coming out on top this year - their drive and determination is amazing" commented Jennie Jenkins, Chairman of Babergh District Council after handing out 20 Community Achievement Awards at the Council's annual ceremony

Community Award winners

Over 35 nominations were received for the awards scheme which is in its 18th year. This year Babergh celebrated its youngest-ever community heroes. Jasmine Alexander, nine, and Phoebe Turner, ten, from Hadleigh spent their summer holiday break helping to raise the spirits of soldiers stationed in Afghanistan by holding a garage sale and raising money to by toiletries and sweets to pack into shoeboxes to post to soldiers based there. Shotley Youth News Crew are a group of teenagers from Shotley and Shotley Gate who were determined to try and change their community's perception of youth today with a screening of a unique self-made filme. The films message demonstrated their need for a space of their own and so far they have raised over £22,000 towards a new youth facility in Shotley. See picture below of the S.Y.N.C. committee receiving their award.
