Changing the way we use lighting and household appliances can be the simplest and cheapest way of taking action on climate change.
Switch off
Make a point of turning off lights and other appliances when they are not needed. If everyone in the UK avoided the stand-by setting, the equivalent of one power station would no longer be needed.

Low energy lights and household appliances
Are you using low energy light bulbs throughout your home? They are now available for most fittings and come in a variety of attractive designs. Low energy light bulbs cost more to purchase than conventional bulbs, but have come down in price. They can last up to 12 times longer and save you around £7 per bulb per year. When purchasing other household appliances such as fridges or washing machines, always look out for the energy saving recommended logo.
Generate your own Energy
Consider installing solar panels or other renewable energy technology for which grants are available. Fitting a solar hot water system can provide up to 60% of your hot water needs. For more information contact the Government’s Low Carbon Buildings Programme and SEAL for local grants. You can access the website for the Low Carbon Buildings Programme via the link below:
Clothes Washing and Drying
Wait until you have a full load before using your washing machine. Also remember that using a 40°C wash cycle rather than 60°C means you use a third less electricity. Reduce the wash to a 30°C cycle and the amount of electricity saved (not to mention money) will be even higher. Modern washing machines are just as effective at lower temperatures. Only use the tumble dryer when necessary. Outdoor line dried clothes can smell fresher and save you money!
Kettle Boiling
Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need. Operating a kettle is equivalent to having 200 low energy light bulbs on at the same time! For other tips on saving energy, contact the Energy Saving Trust via the link below:
