Noise Action Week 26th – 30th April 2010
Noise Action Week aims to promote practical solutions to everyday noise problems. Between Monday 26th April and Friday 30th April 2010, Babergh District Council's Environmental Protection Officers visited 9 primary schools across the Babergh District to carry out presentations and activities for Noise Action Week 2010.
Activities included a demonstration of how a sound level meter works, a 'which is the loudest class' competition, a 'which is the quietest class' competition, a 'who is the loudest teacher' competition, a 'guess the sound' competition, and also a Noise Action Week quick quiz. Noise Action Week souvenirs such as balloons, bugs, pens, bookmarks and stickers were given away to children who participated.
Discussions then took place with individual classes to talk about some of the common noise complaints received by the council, and the impact that excessive noise can have on people's lives and we explained the ways that Environmental Health can help. We also talked about some simple things people can do to try to prevent other people being disturbed by the noise we make.
The main aim of the Noise Action Week Programme was to try to make the children think about the noise they make at an early age and how this may impact other people. In conclusion it was a very successful week with positive feedback from the teachers on the day.
Last year Babergh District Council responded to over 350 noise complaints. These range from the most common complaints such as loud music and barking dogs, to the less common such as bird scarers and early morning noise from cockerels.
Noise can cause disruption and distress to everyone - at home, at leisure, at work and at study.
For Noise Action Week everybody was urged to:
