| Under the Clean Air Act 1993, certain chimneys serving industrial or business furnaces or boilers require approval from the Council before they are first used. The purpose of this is to allow the Council to ensure that the proposed chimney is high enough to allow adequate dispersion of the flue gases so that a nuisance will be avoided.
Chimney height approval is required in addition to any other necessary permissions e.g. planning permission or building regulation approval.
The procedure applies to chimneys serving commercial or industrial furnaces/boilers used to burn the following fuels;

No charge is made for a chimney height application, which should be submitted on the application form below. Please note that paper copies of this form are available from the Council upon request.

The Council aims to determine any application within 4 weeks, but further information may be required during the application process.
Applicants should use the "3rd Edition of the Clean Air Act Memorandum on Chimney Heights" to establish the height of any chimney proposed and may be required to submit details of the calculation during the processing of the application. |
