Nappies

Where possible use reusable cotton nappies. There are also economical disposable nappies that break down faster than other disposable nappies. For more information contact the Suffolk Real Nappy Network on 0870 005 3985 or visit the website on:

http://www.suffolkrealnappynetwork.org.uk/

Newspapers

Recycle your old newspaper in your blue bin. Scrunched up newspaper can also be composted.

O

Oil (cooking)

Please do not pour waste oil down the drain; even with washing up liquid. The oil will cause problems in the sewers with rats and blockages.  Even liquid oils such as vegetable oil will emulsify in the sewer environment.

  • Try to use the correct amount you need
  • Mop up excess fat  with a piece of bread and put out for the birds
  • Excess cooking oil from householders can be deposited in collection banks located at the Household Waste and Recycling Centres across Suffolk. The oil will then be purified and used for the generation of green electricity

Large amounts of oil can be collected from caterers and restaurants:

  • Anglia Oils: 01485 300313
  • Fish Trade Supplies: 01473 601680

Oil (engine)

Engine Oil can be taken to the Household Waste & Recycling Centres.

Oil Tanks

Old oil tanks need to be disposed of at a scrap metal merchant. Try Sackers Ltd on 01473 830373.

P

Packaging

Try to buy products with minimal packaging to avoid excess waste.

Paint

Try to avoid wastage by only buying as much paint as you  need or donate left over paint to family or friends. Empty paint tins (regardless of type) can be disposed of in the black bin. Part full tins of emulsion paint should be stored with the lid off and with sand added to it until it solidifies and can be disposed of in the black residual bin. Part or full tins of solvent based paint can be collected by the council by contacting the Refuse Hotline on 0845 6066045 (Local Rate Call). Please note that none of the Household Waste & Recycling Centres (including Foxhall) will accept paint (including empty tins).

Pallets & crates

Call the National Pallet Service on 014785 529030 for information on local companies that collect pallets and crates from trade premises.

Paper

Paper and cardboard can be recycled in your blue bin. Large cardboard boxes should be flattened and left at the side of your bin.

Plastic Bags

Many supermarkets have a carrier bag recycling centre in store as well as 'bag for life' schemes where they will replace high quality plastic bags once you have worn them out. Wherever possible reuse your plastic bags for your shopping or as bin liners.
However, plastic bags and plastic film can now be taken to the following Household Waste & Recycling Centres: Hadleigh, Ipswich and Sudbury.
As a last resort, carrier bags can be placed in your black bin but must not go in the blue bin.

Plastic Bottles

Plastic bottles, margarine containers and clean plastic containers can be recycled in your blue bin. Remember to remove the lids from plastic bottles but still put them in the blue bin.

Postage stamps

Many charities collect old postage stamps. Cut around postage stamps, leave a good margin and do not steam off.
E.g.:
Guide Dogs for the Blind Association
Oxfam
RNLI
