Tips for Reducing your Waste

Tips on how to reduce the amount of waste your household produces

  • re-use your plastic shopping bags
  • dispose of glass at your local recycling centre,
  • reduce junk mail, visit the Mailing Preference Service website.
  • dispose of unwanted clothing and textiles and shoes via charity shops, jumble sales and local clothing banks
  • buy fruit and vegetables loose instead of pre-packaged – this can save money too!
  • buy refillable bottles of household products

If you still find it difficult to manage, remember the following:

  • put recyclable materials loose into your blue recycling bin,
  • ensure that all air is removed from bin bags before they are placed in you residual bin,
  • crush plastic bottles and cans by standing on them before placing them in your blue bin,
  • large cardboard boxes can be flattened and left beside your blue bin on collection day.
