Why is "Waste and Recycling" so important?
So why is this subject so important to Babergh people? Simple. All of us in Babergh, as in Suffolk and elsewhere, are in a race against time. By the year 2015 the ‘landfill’ site at Great Blakenham – where all of our black bin waste is currently buried in a huge hole in the ground – will be filled.
There is a serious environmental cost involved in burying our waste in the ground – and that cost is growing. If we are to keep our council taxes down, then all of us are going to have to learn the four Rs of dealing with, and cutting down, our waste… reduce, re-use, recycle and recover. And that job has to begin now…not in 2015.
Good things are already happening in our area. Currently, Suffolk is one of the highest performing authorities in the country for recycling, but as a community we can all do more. We are all in this together. If we do not take up the challenge of cutting our levels of waste the cost will be real and two-fold…to our environment…and in our pockets. The purpose of this section of Babergh’s website is to give clear information about the service we offer and to offer practical advice and tips that we need to help us become ‘wastecutters’, thoughtful re-users and better recyclers. It may mean that each of us has to change our whole way of thinking about what we have always casually thrown away. The question is: are we community-minded or not? If we are, then we simply have no alternative.

Collection Service – The TwinBin Scheme
Your refuse collection scheme involves the use of two wheeled bins. One is a blue bin for the collection of recyclable materials, and the other a black bin for non recyclable waste. The service is operated by our contractor Serco. Every household receives a weekly refuse collection service. One week the recyclables in the blue bin are collected, the next week the black bin is emptied.
Collection Instructions
Please ensure that your wheeled bin is presented at the kerbside for collection by 6.30 am.
Bin lids should be firmly closed.
No side waste will be collected. However, a limited amount of flattened cardboard can be left at the side of your blue bin for collection.
Contaminated Blue bins will not be emptied.
Missed bin
In the case of a genuine missed collection, the bin must be reported to us within 48 hours of the scheduled collection day, and we will return within 48 hours of receiving the missed bin report.
Whilst on most weeks, a collection round remains similar and residents get used to a regular time of collection, the contractor occasionally changes routes or times for operational reasons. Bins should always be presented by 6.30 am, regardless of any normal collection time. Where a collection is made earlier than the normal time and residents miss the collection, the contractor will not return.
