An investigation into local housing needs involving over 8000 residents is being launched in May by Babergh District Council.

DCA Consultants working on behalf of Babergh District Council, is sending out survey forms to over 8000 randomly selected households throughout the District, including homeowners, people who rent privately and tenants of both the Council and Housing Associations. In addition, there will also be 200 face to face interviews with a mixture of older and younger people designed to highlight their particular housing needs.

The survey will provide the Council with a comprehensive picture of both current and future housing needs to support the ongoing commitment to help meet the need for more affordable housing in the Babergh District. This is one of the Council’s top priorities.

Cllr Sue Wrigglesworth, the Chairman of the Council’s Housing Task Group said

"We encourage everyone who receives a questionnaire to complete and return the form. What local people have to say, regardless of whether their current housing needs are being met or not, is extremely relevant and will assist the Council greatly as it shapes its long term housing strategy and planning policies."

"We need to ensure there is adequate housing provision for local people to rent or buy, whatever their financial means. The survey is not just about people seeking local authority or housing association homes. We are particularly interested in doing more to help young people who want to set up their own homes in the District and also provide the elderly with more choice in the type of housing which meets their needs whilst promoting their independence."

The housing needs survey is being undertaken on the Council’s behalf by David Couttie Associates (DCA), an independent company specialising in housing research. Questionnaires are due to be issued on Thursday, 29th April 2004 with a return date of Wednesday, 18th May 2004. All responses will be treated in the strictest confidence with no prospect of the Council identifying individual people or properties from the data supplied. Anyone who would like more information on completing the questionnaires should contact Ian Tippett, Housing Services Manager at the Council on 01473 822801.
