Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee is due to consider a report at its next meeting into how best to repair a recently discovered leak in Hadleigh Swimming Pool.

"Like everything, Hadleigh Pool has a limited lifespan and in spite of Babergh having spent £500,000 on improvements, maintenance and repairs, it is inevitable that a pool of this design will suffer increasing problems of this sort" explained Tim Mutum, Babergh’s Head of Leisure and Community Services.

Babergh’s engineers were called in when it was noticed that the pool was losing significant amounts of water. Investigations showed that the leak is in the water inlet pipes that run under the concrete pool.

It is believed that any repair would cost between £15,000 and £30,000 to complete. Councillors on Babergh’s Strategy Committee are due to consider the matter when they meet on 6th May.

Babergh anticipates that any work may necessitate the closure of the pool for a limited period of time, in which case Babergh will ensure that users are kept fully informed as to progress.

In terms of the longer-term "Babergh is committed to maintaining the existing pool to the best possible standard within very tight financial constraints until the longer-term future of a Hadleigh swimming facility is resolved" outlined Mr Mutum.

"However, this current structural problem does underline the need for Babergh and other interested parties to be as flexible and imaginative as possible about the realistic long-term solutions on offer, especially given their impact on Babergh’s Council Taxpayers. Babergh’s current Best Value Review of Cultural Services allows all interested parties in the Hadleigh area to contribute positive and practical suggestions as to the best way forward".

The Best Value Review of Cultural Services is due to report back on its findings, including those relating to swimming facilities in the Hadleigh area, in the autumn of this year.
