The village of Cockfield has been announced as the winner of the Babergh District round of the Calor Suffolk Village Of The Year Awards 2004.
The District Awards (formerly Best Kept Village Competition), which will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2005, sees villages evaluated by a panel of 4 judges on a set of five criteria which among other things takes into account general appearance, protection of the environment and community spirit. Cockfield will now receive the Cosford Trophy, which takes the form of a certificate and sign for the village, together with a cheque for £500 from Babergh District Council to be used as a contribution towards a village or community project.
The judges were particularly impressed by Cockfield’s general appearance and how well the village was maintained. They also noted the high level of community spirit amongst villagers and the roles of the Parish and Community Councils.
Cockfield will now go on to represent the Babergh District in the County Round of the Village of the Year Awards, with judging due to take place at the end of July. If successful, it will be entered for the National competition in October.
Colin Matthews, Babergh’s Senior Administrative Officer said “We offer our wholehearted congratulations to Cockfield. This is the eighth time they’ve won the Cosford Trophy! Let’s hope that they can go on and become County winners as they did in 1996”.
The 2004 competition was open to villages with an electoral roll population of 501-3000 inhabitants. |
