SUDBURY HERS: GRANT AIDED BUILDING WORKS BEGIN IN EARNEST

Summary

Grant aided works to repair roofs and reinstate traditional timber sash windows are getting under way at two locations as part of the Sudbury Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS).

Grant aided works to repair roofs and reinstate traditional timber sash windows are getting under way at two locations as part of the Sudbury Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS).

In East Street, the shop premises formerly known as Ali’s Toy Store has already had the roof to the rear wing repaired and will shortly have its sash windows reinstated to the front of the building.  The existing Victorian fascia and cornice is shared with the neighbouring shop and it is hoped that the window reinstatements and a sympathetic colour scheme will re-integrate the two historic frontages, considerably improving the street scene.

In Gainsborough Street, roof repairs to the main building and window reinstatements to the Christopher Lane elevation of nos 13 - 15 are proposed.  Repair works to the walls and roof are expected to start soon.  Original windows will be used as a pattern for the proposed reinstatements, allowing the removal of several unattractive modern intrusions from this historic elevation, following the approval of listed building consent.

Patrick Taylor, Babergh’s Project Architect said “Reinstatement works to the Gainsborough Street elevation of no. 13 were carried out under a similar grant scheme some years ago.  The current works should return the historic detail to the whole of this range”.

The Sudbury HERS has offered around £57,000 of grant aid towards similar repair and reinstatement projects around the town; a total of 12 grant offers to date.  Commercial properties within the heart of the Old Town, East Street and Station Road could benefit from up to 75% grant aid.  The scheme is administered by Babergh District Council, funded 50% by English Heritage, and 50% from local contributors including Babergh, Sudbury Town Council, Suffolk County Council and the Community Energy Project.
