The Councillors charged by Babergh District Council to investigate local solutions to public car parks in Hadleigh, Lavenham and Sudbury will be meeting next Tuesday (June 8th) to set the agreed scope of their investigations.

The Car Parking Working Group has been tasked to work with town and parish councils and other groups to explore how best those car parks can be financed and managed.

The areas of investigation are likely to include how the car parks are currently being used, especially by ‘space blockers’ (ie those who park for the full day but are not shoppers), the impact of different types of charges and how differing management regimes might contribute to the continued wellbeing of the three shopping centres.

Babergh plans to host meetings with Hadleigh and Sudbury Town and Lavenham Parish Councils, as well as with the Chambers of Commerce in the two towns. In addition, Babergh is keen to hear from any other local businesses or groups that have conducted their own research into any of the areas covered by the working group.

"Babergh aims to complete its in-depth investigations into the future of our public car parks by the autumn of this year at which point we will have a clearer idea of their long-term financing and running" explained Mike Hammond Babergh’s Corporate Director. "What is clear is that doing nothing is not an option. We know that this is an issue of interest to many local people and we will do our best to get people involved as the investigations progress".
