POPLAR ROAD SHOPS REDEVELOPMENT GETS THE THUMBS UP

Summary

Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee yesterday gave the go ahead for the redevelopment of the shops at Poplar Road Great Cornard. (25th June)

Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee yesterday gave the go ahead for the redevelopment of the shops at Poplar Road Great Cornard.

The redeveloped complex will include new shops, flats for private rent, a community resource and 19 new social rent and shared ownership dwellings.

Babergh will be working with Flagship Housing Group and a private developer to bring about the redevelopment. Funding for the scheme has already been secured from the Housing Corporation.

It is hoped to start on site early 2005 with completion in 2007. The development will be phased to keep the disruption to the existing shopkeepers to a minimum.

Planning permission will now be sought, and the plans for the scheme will be available shortly for public viewing.

The Chairman of the Council, Sue Wigglesworth, gave her full backing to the scheme. ‘It is an exciting project and one that will be of great benefit to the community. Over the years the shopping parade has become run down. The building of new shops, a community resource and more housing will provide a much needed boost to the area’.
