Babergh District Council’s Development Committee have today given the green light to a grant in the sum of £20,307 being made to Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury.
The grant, part of the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS) will go towards structural, brickwork and window repairs at the Gainsborough Street art gallery and museum as part of an overall upgrading of the Grade I Listed Building, home of artist Thomas Gainsborough, who was born there in 1727.
Diane Perkins, Director of Gainsborough’s House said “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded the HERS grant, as part of our current fundraising appeal to refurbish the whole of Gainsborough’s House”.
HERS Project Architect, Patrick Taylor said “Grants of this kind are invaluable to historic towns like Sudbury as they enable conservation works to be carried out, enhancing the town centre and making it a more enjoyable place for residents and visitors alike”.
The Sudbury HERS scheme is set to run for a period of three years, from April 2003 to March 2006. The main aim of the scheme is to promote economic regeneration through grant aid for the repair and conservation of buildings in parts of Sudbury Conservation Area peripheral to the main town centre.
Works already carried out in Sudbury as part of the scheme include the recent paving improvement works in North Street and the upgrading of paving in Gainsborough Street currently underway. Grants have also been offered for conservation works to various properties in Gainsborough Street - no’s 13-15 Gainsborough Street have recently been re-roofed and undergone window reinstatement to the rear of the properties with the help of a HERS grant. |
