Babergh District Council’s ‘Sort It Crew’ were today supporting the Woodland Trust and Recycle Now, the national recycling campaign, by recycling their Christmas cards at the Sudbury branch of W H Smith.

Famous faces such as Alistair McGowan and celebrity gardener Chris Beardshaw have been urging the public to recycle as many cards as possible. The cards are recycled into new paper products and money raised is used by the Woodland Trust to plant new trees in association with their  ‘Tree For All’ campaign.

BBC TV’s Chris Beardshaw says: “As well as recycling as much as I possibly can in the garden, I am keen to recycle in many other ways. The Woodland Trust campaign is an excellent way of ensuring all of the cards we receive during the festive season do not go to waste.”

Special Christmas card recycling bins are located in every branch of W H Smith and Tesco throughout the country.  In Suffolk over 8.07 tonnes of Christmas cards were collected through the scheme last year and it is hoped to exceed this total in 2005.

The Babergh ‘Sort It Crew’, a team of recycling advisors funded by the Waste Resource Action Plan (WRAP), will be visiting households throughout the district talking to residents about their recycling habits and offering advice on ways to get the most from household waste.  Similar projects are being carried out throughout Suffolk as part of defra’s waste implementation programme.
