Babergh District Council’s 'Be Active Project' is providing exciting new activities for teenagers across the district during the summer holidays which if successful, could lead to the formation of regular sports clubs.

Greg Cooper, Babergh’s Leisure Inclusion Officer explains: 'We’ve spent a considerable amount of time talking with local partners and teenagers about the types of activities they’d like to see taking place.  The Be Active Project has been funded by the Babergh 'Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership' to provide safe and healthy activities every day of the summer holidays, which aim to engage youngsters across the district'.

'The 'Slam Dunk' basketball programme has been set-up to provide early evening and late night sessions in Sudbury and Great Cornard for teenagers who struggle to find things to do at these times.  Conventional sports clubs provide fantastic active opportunities for the community but can be intimidating for those who are new to the sport, or have never been a member of a club. These sessions aim to provide an easy gateway into basketball, which the Be Active Project will extend past the summer as regular club sessions if enough interest is generated.'

Slam Dunk will take place at Great Cornard Sports Centre (Mondays 9 -11pm) and Belle Vue Park, Sudbury (Wednesdays 6.30 - 8.30pm) throughout the summer holidays.

'The 'Jumpers 4 Goalposts' football roadshow is taking place every day of the week at five different locations.  These sessions - which are delivered by FA qualified coaches -may include coaching drills, Brazilian tricks or small sided games, depending on what those attending the sessions want to concentrate on.  All attendees will be provided with information about local football clubs, so that they may continue to play regularly within a safe and healthy environment.

Jumpers 4 Goalposts venues, dates and times throughout the summer holidays are;

  • Mondays 2- 4pm - Shotley Rangers FC, Shotley
  • Tuesdays 6 - 8pm - Friars Meadow, Sudbury
  • Wednesdays 2 - 4pm - Kings Road Open Area, Glemsford
  • Thursdays 2 - 4pm - Stephenson Centre, Gt. Cornard
  • Fridays 2 - 4pm - East House Meadow, Hadleigh

 All sessions are open to boys and girls, cost £1 to attend, and there is no need to pre-book -  simply turn-up and take part!
