Monday 27th June saw the start of Big Recycle Week, a countywide initiative aimed at raising recycling awareness. Events in the Babergh district kicked off with Beaumont Primary School in Hadleigh taking part in a sports competition with a difference!
Children from years three and four found themselves grabbing litter with a litter-picker, running a Sort-It recycling relay race and causing chaos as three-legged ‘composters’ and ‘wasters’. The games formed part of a nationwide campaign, headed by Olympic rowing champion Matthew Pinsent, in partnership with the seven district and borough councils and Suffolk County Council's school education programme. Everyone that took part in the games was given a prize made from recycled materials.
Staff at Babergh District Council’s Hadleigh HQ also did their bit to support Big Recycle Week, recycling paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, steel and aluminium cans, glass, textiles, ink cartridges, batteries, spectacles, mobile phones and over 10kg’s of compostable waste. Not only was this good news for the environment in reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfill, but local charities and organisations such as Sue Ryder, Vision Aid and the Sudbury Resource Centre will benefit from the proceeds of the items collected.
The week drew to a close on Saturday 2nd July with a Recycle Roadshow at the ‘ Meet the Saxons’ Sproughton Primary School Summer Fete. As well as a recycling hoop-la game, there were displays of compost bins and presentations on how to recycle, what to recycle and how all the mixed recyclate gets sorted at the new recovery centre in Great Blakenham.
Susan Wright, Babergh’s Waste Project Officer, said “The week was a huge success for Babergh. Many people were surprised at the vast array of items that can be recycled – not to mention astounded by the everyday products created from recycled materials”.
