BABERGH BABES TAKE GREAT STRIDES FOR BREAST CANCER

A team of female employees from Babergh District Council will be power-walking their way around the streets of London next weekend, raising money for breast cancer charities in the process.

The team, who go by the name of The Babergh Babes, will join together with 15,000 women (and a few brave men!) to take part in the Playtex Moonwalk on Saturday 18th June. The Moonwalk is a 26.2 mile power-walking marathon which is now in its eighth year.  This is the flagship event for Walk The Walk, the charity behind the Moonwalk, and raised in excess of £4.5 million in 2004.

As if the challenge of 26.2 miles is not tough enough, the Moonwalk – as the name would suggest – takes place at night, with participants leaving Hyde Park at around midnight and crossing the finishing line to the sound of the dawn chorus.  In recognition, and in many cases, celebration and remembrance of loved ones, participants take part in the event donning decorated bras – which are mandatory for the male contingent!

Staff and Members at Babergh District Council have been both supportive and generous.  At the last count, over £650 had been pledged – a sum which is anticipated to be even higher as the event draws closer.  In addition, each team member has their own individual target of raising a minimum amount of £100 for the charity.

Patricia Rockall, Chief Executive of Babergh District Council is one of those taking part in the Moonwalk.  She said “This is by no means a walk in the park!  Everyone in the team has committed to the Moonwalk, and for some it will be the toughest physical challenge they have ever faced.  We have all been training hard, as well as drumming up sponsorship from colleagues and Members … in fact, almost anyone we’ve come into contact with!  We found out in February that we had been accepted to take part in the Moonwalk, and at the time June 18th seemed such a long way off – it’s hard to believe it’s finally arrived.  I’m sure that everyone’s training and dedication will pay off.  We’re all looking forward to finding out just how much money we have raised for this very worthy cause”.

Anyone wanting to show their support for the Babergh Babes, and make a donation towards their sponsorship can pick up sponsor forms at all reception points at Babergh’s Hadleigh HQ and at Sudbury Advice Centre in Sudbury Town Hall.
