Babergh District Council is working with the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich to give young people an opportunity to be theatre critics.
On Tuesday 17th May 12 students from 6 High Schools in the Babergh district (Hadleigh, Holbrook, East Bergholt, Great Cornard, Sudbury and the Royal Hospital School) are to review the hip-hop performance of Rennie Harris - Pure Movement, a dance troupe from the US who are visiting the New Wolsey as part of an acclaimed UK tour.
The New Wolsey is assisting Babergh in the development of its Youth Strategy Action Plan by allowing the students to view the performance free of charge and write their own reviews for publishing both locally and on the Theatre’s own website. The best reviews will be selected for publication.
Andrew Burton, Head of Marketing at the New Wolsey commented: This pilot project is a unique opportunity for Babergh students to engage with the arts. Not only will they get a chance to see an exciting hip-hop performance, they will also be able to hone their writing skills with the help of a professional journalist. We see this initiative as the start of an on-going relationship with Babergh who, like the New Wolsey, is committed to giving young people a voice.
Karina Coghlin, the Council’s Tourism & Arts Manager was equally enthusiastic I think this is a fantastic opportunity for the students, not only will they see some really good theatre productions, they will also be able to encourage their peers to take an interest in the theatre this is an exciting project for everyone involved
