Summary

In an effort to get recycling out of the home and onto the streets, Babergh District Council teamed up with the Hadleigh Hares Running Club for the Hares’ annual 10-mile road race yesterday to raise awareness of maintaining a clean environment.

In an effort to get recycling out of the home and onto the streets, Babergh District Council teamed up with the Hadleigh Hares Running Club for the Hares’ annual 10-mile road race yesterday to raise awareness of maintaining a clean environment.

On crossing the finishing line, each participant was presented with a “Bag For Life” which contained goodies including a hat, key fobs and pencils made from recycled plastic cups.  The Bag For Life scheme is supported by many supermarkets and aims to cut down on the amount of carrier bags thrown away every day.

The organisers of yesterday’s race also made sure that recycling facilities were provided at the drinks-stations for runners to dispose of their plastic bottles.  There were also litter pickers along the route and at the drinks-stations who made sure that the area was left clean, with recyclable materials such as plastic bottles and plastic cups being collected for recycling.

“We wanted to take the opportunity, along with several other running clubs, to support recycling in Suffolk and would like to thank the Hadleigh Hares as race organisers, for providing recycling facilities for the race” said Susan Wright, Babergh’s Waste Project Officer.

Stars of the sporting world including Olympic 400m runner Roger Black and rowing champion Matthew Pinsent support the ‘Recycle Now’ campaign.  More recently Ipswich Town defender Jason De Vos has been active in promoting recycling of the rubbish produced on match days at Portman Road.
