A record-breaking 46 nominations have been received for Babergh’s Community Achievement Awards 2007.
The awards, which are now in their 15th year, aim to recognise the people, groups and businesses that play a vital role in the community. This year two new categories were added – including one for eligible businesses.
Jill Barton, Corporate Support Officer at Babergh District Council, said: “We are surprised and delighted by the huge number and variety of nominations we have received – a third more than last year.”
She added: “The awards are a perfect opportunity to honour the countless individuals and groups who freely give their time to help others – and they seem particularly apt in the run-up to the festive season.
“This response proves community spirit in Babergh is alive and well. It seems people are helping each other more and, fortunately, they’re also keener than ever to tell us all about it.”
This year’s award categories were: outstanding contribution made by a young person or group of young people 18 years or under; selfless service by an individual (over 18) to a voluntary body or to the community; voluntary or community group that improves the quality of life for residents in our district and outstanding business contribution to the well-being of the community.
Nomination forms were received from various parish and town councils, schools, community and voluntary groups.
Winners will be notified by Christmas, and then attend a glittering awards ceremony on March 7 at the Stoke by Nayland Club. Mark Murphy, presenter of BBC Radio Suffolk’s breakfast show, will compere the event, which is being sponsored by Prolog.
The names of the award winners will be published on the Community Achievement Awards 2007 page of Babergh’s website.
