Today (10th December) Babergh District Council has started trialling the use of podcasting – comprising audio clips of interviews with Babergh officers – available from its website. Working with AuViPod, a Suffolk-based internet broadcasting company, Babergh has recorded a few short interviews with Jonas Grist, Babergh’s Waste Strategy Officer about a number of Christmas-related initiatives, including a fir tree recycling scheme and a one-off supply of sacks for the extra household recycling waste likely to be generated over the festive season.
According to Paul Simon, Babergh’s Communications & PR Manager “Babergh sends out a large number of media releases and other communications – all of which are posted up on our website. However, some of our residents are unable to access information in this way and so the introduction of podcasting may make it easier for them to keep up-to-date with what is going on”.
Ivan Howlett, AuViPod’s co-founder said "It’s people who make the decisions and do the work affecting our lives. So the human voice is such an important part of the message. We’re obviously delighted that Babergh’s trying out this way of keeping people in touch."
To run the clips users will need to have downloaded either RealPlayer or Windows Media Player onto their computers and Babergh has provided a link to allow them to do this if that is necessary.
“We hope this experiment in podcasting provides a more inclusive news service to residents and we would like to hear their views before reviewing whether Babergh should offer this type of service in the longer term” concluded Paul Simon.
