BABERGH WELCOMES OUTCOME OF FLY-TIPPING PROSECUTION

Summary

Babergh District Council has applauded the decision of Sudbury Magistrates’ Court last Friday (7th November) to order a Hadleigh man to pay £527.60 in costs for fly-tipping.

Babergh District Council has applauded the decision of Sudbury Magistrates’ Court last Friday (7th November) to order a Hadleigh man to pay £527.60 in costs for fly-tipping.

Glenn-Darren Martin from Hadleigh was also given a Conditional Discharge for 12 months for the illegal dumping of waste on the side of Gallows Hill, Hadleigh in April 2008.  The rubbish consisted of a TV, vacuum cleaner, toys and eight sacks of rubbish containing mainly children’s clothing.

Part of the fine would finance the clean up costs to remove the fly-tipped materials.

According to James Buckingham, Babergh’s Principal Environmental Protection Officer, “we are pleased that Mr. Martin pleaded guilty and note that he stated he was sorry for his actions and the inconvenience caused. However, fly-tipping is a serious environmental crime that blights many parts of our district. Therefore, the outcome of this prosecution by Babergh should serve as a warning to others that we will not tolerate this type of crime and will not hesitate to use every resource available to us to help catch others and bring further prosecutions”.

“We receive approximately 430 reports of fly-tipping a year, which costs Council Taxpayers £22,000 a year to clear up. This is money which could have been better spent on other vital services.  There should be no need for anybody in Babergh to fly-tip waste with our household collection service and the Household Waste and Recycling Centres in Sudbury, Hadleigh, Chelmondiston and Ipswich” concluded Mr Buckingham.

Babergh is urging anyone witnessing fly-tipping to record as many details about the incident and the waste as you can and contact the Council on (01473) 826622.”
