A scheme that gives teenagers the chance to review theatre performances as professional critics is about to launch for 2008.

For the fifth year running, Babergh District Council is working with the New Wolsey Theatre, in Ipswich, to give a group of students – this year from the Sudbury Upper School & Arts College - an opportunity to become theatre critics and review professional shows.

Danyele Higgins, Alice Gilfillan, Hugh Millea and Sam Hume are all Year 11 students studying BTEC Acting courses. The project will support their studies by broadening their experience of professional theatre and by developing their understanding of the role of a theatre critic.

Their first review will be Little Shop of Horrors, which starts on September 11th. This musical comedy is one of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time and was a hugely successful Hollywood film.

Jill Barton, Babergh District Council's Community Development Officer said: "All of our students are looking forward to the performances and I am sure, as well as enjoying their year as critics, they will gain new skills for the future

“Our partnership working with the New Wolsey Theatre has grown from strength to strength and I am looking forward to seeing the students' reviews of all the exciting productions on offer this year.”

And Andrew Burton, Head of Marketing at The New Wolsey Theatre, added : “We are delighted that Danyele, Alice, Hugh and Sam are taking part in this year’s scheme – it helps us to spread the word about our wide range of productions to lots of students who might not have us on their radar.

“It also empowers the students taking part by giving them professional guidance on developing their writing skills in a highly practical way.”

Little Shop of Horrors runs from September 11th until October 4th. For more information please call the theatre’s Box Office on (01473) 295900 or visit the website: http://www.wolseytheatre.co.uk/ ENDS
