Adults with learning disabilities and other disabled adults in Babergh have the chance to improve their rugby skills and benefit from expert coaching this week (8th).
Official coaches from the Rugby Football Union will be coming along to the free sports taster day at Sudbury Upper School Sports Centre, which is being held on April 8th.
The day, which runs from 10am until 3pm, is being organised by Babergh District Council’s Be Active programme and the Suffolk Befriending Scheme, who are also providing a free picnic lunch.
Funding from the West Suffolk Local Strategic Partnership (WSLSP) and The Suffolk Foundation has enabled The Suffolk Befriending scheme to build on the successes of the tag rugby sessions that were held in Haverhill last year.
Stephanie Lloyd, Babergh’s Community Development Officer (Leisure), said: “Babergh is always pleased to work with local partners to benefit local people.
“The opportunity for disabled adults to receive top class coaching is so encouraging, it gives them a chance to improve their performance, technique and develop their skills.
“The day is about taking part and having fun as well as giving the coaches the opportunity to work with some potentially ‘club standard’ athletes.”
And Shirley Moore, from the Suffolk Be Friending Scheme, added: “Adults with learning disabilities don’t get many opportunities to exercise in a team environment so these sessions will give them a real boost and give them a chance to take part in mainstream team sports.
“We are grateful to our funders - for helping us and welcome the opportunity to work with the Babergh Be Active team to give them that opportunity.”
Be Active and Suffolk Befriending Scheme hope to set up a regular tag rugby club in Hadleigh twice monthly – for more details contact Stephanie Lloyd, Babergh’s Community Development Officer (Leisure) or Louise Pennell, Babergh’s Community Development Officer (Leisure Inclusion), on 01473 825834 or email: stephanie.lloyd@babergh.gov.uk or louise.pennell@babergh.gov.uk
This day forms part of the rugby development work that is being delivered throughout Suffolk by Babergh Be Active, Suffolk Befriending Scheme and Optua Leisure, which recently took a group of disabled adults to Twickenham for a tour of the stadium. ENDS
