Almost 100 Drama students from local schools within the Babergh district have been working to highlight issues posed by domestic violence in the home and the results of their work will be displayed in a Showcase Evening on Wednesday May 20 at 7pm in the Sudbury Upper School auditorium.
The Showcase Evening is the culmination of a project which was funded by Babergh District Council in January of this year when students took part in intensive practical drama workshops led by a professional director from the Theatre-in-Education organisation, to inspire their own documentary-style plays suitable to be shown to other young people.
Year 11 students explored the subject as part of their GCSE Drama, BTEC Acting and BTEC Performing Arts coursework and have already performed their individual drama pieces to their peers.
Jil Barton, Community Development Officer at Babergh District Council commented “The aim of the project was to educate young people about domestic violence and lead to an improved understanding of how to avoid developing relationships based on violence and abuse.
"Young people are often in need of confidence building and encouragement, especially those who maybe at risk, in order to make safe choices; it is also necessary to dispel myths and challenge stereotypes.”
Following the project one Sudbury Year 10 student said ’It was helpful to have real-life stories to investigate – it helped me to understand domestic violence from the victim’s point-of view and a Hadleigh student commented ‘it was well worth it – a memorable experience’.
Sudbury Upper School has organised the evening in conjunction with Babergh Domestic Violence & Abuse Forum and Suffolk Victim support and representatives from these agencies will be on hand to answer any questions.
The Showcase Evening is an open event and if you wish to attend please telephone Sudbury Upper School, Student Services on 01787 375131.
