HAMILTON ROAD QUARTER, SUDBURY: HUGE RESPONSE DURING FIRST WEEK OF CONSULTATION

Summary

Hundreds of residents in Sudbury and the surrounding villages have already viewed – and given their opinions on – the three options aimed at revamping an unsightly part of the town centre.

Hundreds of residents in Sudbury and the surrounding villages have already viewed – and given their opinions on – the three options aimed at revamping an unsightly part of the town centre.

The Hamilton Road area, which is owned by various landowners, south of St Peter’s Church and to the west of Great Eastern Road and which includes the bus station has been considered something of an eyesore for a while. Babergh District Council, which owns the bus station, has teamed up with Suffolk County Council to work with local groups and others to collect the public’s views on a number of potential options for the area.

Babergh and Suffolk staff were on hand to answer questions both at St. Peter’s Church last Thursday (October 29) and again at Sudbury Town Hall on Saturday (October 31) supported by information boards and 3D computer images of each of three options.

According to Sandra Scott, Babergh’s Hamilton Road Quarter Project Leader, “the level of interest has been remarkably high. We are also pleased that the information we have sent out previously in the form of leaflets, website links and social media has meant that most people were already aware of the options and came to the exhibitions to ask more detailed questions and raise specific points”.

There are still another five weeks left for residents to make their views known, whether that be by post, at the two remaining exhibitions planned for November 14 (10am to 6pm) at Sudbury Town Hall and November 27 (6pm to 9pm) at St. Peter’s Church or via the special Hamilton Road Quarter website has also be set up at www.onesuffolk.co.uk/hamiltonroadquarter where residents can give their views on the three options throughout the consultation period

Another, unmanned, exhibition will be located through part of the period of consultation (October 26th to December 4th) firstly at the Sudbury Tourist Information Centre and then at other locations, including at Borehamgate near to the bus station.

Once the public have made their comments and their preferences and any additional issues raised analysed, a report will be prepared with recommendations in the early part of 2010.
