BABERGH STAGES …. THE QUAY THEATRE CRITICS 2009/10
Summary
A popular theatre scheme, run by Babergh District Council, has been widened out to include the west of the district for the first time.
Babergh will be working in partnership with The Quay Theatre, in Sudbury, to offer two secondary school pupils the opportunity to become theatre critics for a season.
The council has run a similar scheme with The New Wolsey Theatre, in Ipswich, for the last six years and has always selected pupils from across the district as critics but this meant them having to travel to performances.
Now Hanna Bunting and Florence Glanfield, both Year 10 students studying Drama at Sudbury Upper School, have been chosen for this year’s critic scheme – which runs parallel to the Ipswich theatre’s scheme.
This project will both enrich their studies and develop their writing skills. Their first review will be a performance by Abbie Lathe and The Lovelies, a group of singer songwriters playing captivating instruments.
Jill Barton, Babergh District Council's Community Development Officer, said: “Both our students are really committed and I am looking forward to receiving some great reviews from them. The Quay is staging some really good productions this year and our students are in for a real treat.
“This is another example of Babergh working in partnership with theatres and it is great to be able to give young people from the west of our district this fantastic opportunity to review a range of exciting productions.
“We have run the scheme for six years using the New Wolsey in Ipswich – and have now widened the net to incorporate a theatre in the west of the district too.”
Robert Benton, Chief Executive Officer at The Quay, added: “Theatre criticism has always been an important part of the whole business of drama and music.
“I am very much looking forward to reading the opinions of these young people. I think the autumn season at the Quay is all marvellous. But I would say that wouldn’t I?”
Abbie Lathe and The Lovelies are performing on Friday 25th September. For more information please call the Quay Theatre box office on (01787) 374745 or visit the Quay Theatre website www.quaytheatre.org.uk/.
Babergh and the Wolsey’s critics scheme has chosen James Wade and Lori Thurston - both year 10 students studying at East Bergholt High School and following the Applied GCSE Performing Arts course – to be its theatre critics for this season. ENDS
