Performance poetry walks, a travelling insect circus, farm artist residencies, a caravan gallery and outdoor 16mm film screenings are just some of the treats in store for those interested in stepping out into The Great Outdoors this summer across the South and Heart of Suffolk.

An exciting programme of events, which will run from May until the end of August, aims to bring ‘unexpected art to unusual places’ and has been devised by the ARTS services of Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils with support from a number of local and county partners.

So what is it all about?  Susie Tyrrell, Babergh’s Arts and Community Development Officer, worked closely with Zoey Furzer, from Mid Suffolk ARTS services, to organise the event.

She said: “We wanted to offer new and exciting opportunities for people to engage in high quality arts activity in more informal and accessible ways.

“The Great Outdoors will see events taking place in unusual locations ranging from woodlands, fenlands, fields and farms and will help to animate and transform the public spaces in some of Suffolk’s most beautiful rural villages and market towns.

“Outdoors arts events have a particular ability to engage, inform and entertain audiences that might not otherwise attend an arts event - we hope to introduce new audiences to more arts experiences and prove that art can take place even where you least expect it.”

The Great Outdoors boasts 32 events with highlights that include the highly atmospheric site-specific performance of WOLF, hilarious street performances by Mr Stretch and Mr Armstrong aimed at getting the nation fit for the 2012 Olympics, the magnificent travelling insect circus museum, story strolls for children and families on charming countryside sites and some movie classics such as Some Like It Hot and The History of Mr Polly featured in 16mm magic.

The majority of events will be free or a small charge will be made. To request a copy of The Great Outdoors leaflet please contact: 01449 724638 or visit: www.onesuffolk.co.uk/TheGreatOutdoors for a full listing of events.
