Babergh District Council’s new Chairman will be swapping his ceremonial chain for a wetsuit when he tackles a charity swim across a reservoir this month.
Cllr David Wood, ward Member for Alton, has been busy training for the Great East Swim where he hopes to raise cash for two worthy causes.
The event, which is taking place on June 19 at Alton Water Park, will involve competitors completing a mile-long swim in the chilly reservoir waters.
Cllr Wood said: “ I am expecting it to be a severe shock to the system after practising in the warm waters of a heated swimming pool but it is something I am determined to do to raise money for my two charities”.
All of the money raised from Cllr Wood’s swim will be added to funds raised throughout his year as Babergh Chairman and then split between his two nominated charities for this year – The Fire Fighters’ Charity and Sue Ryder Care - The Chantry, in Sproughton.
Cllr Wood has a personal connection to both charities – having been a fire fighter for more than 30 years and experienced, first hand, the wonderful care given to patients at The Chantry. The nurses there provide long-term, respite and day care for people with acquired brain injury and chronic neurological conditions such as Parkinson's Disease.
And Cllr Wood added: “ I won’t be out to break any world records just to finish no matter how long it takes me will be an achievement”.
