A campaign aimed at tenants across Babergh and Mid Suffolk has seen a number of people put themselves forward for one of the six seats available on the Joint Housing Board.
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils kicked off a campaign in January 2012 asking tenants to nominate themselves for one of the seats, following a decision last year to form a Joint Housing Board – the first Joint Housing Board in the country.
24 candidates have nominated themselves for the six seats resulting in a contest for each available seat. The election to the Joint Housing Board will be carried out with the same rules as a normal council election.
Just over 50 requests came forward during the nomination period for information and nomination packs. Tenants were engaged in a number of ways to encourage them to come forward such as through direct text messaging, emails and letters, posters in public areas and through the use of the local media.
Martin King, Head of Housing at Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, said: “We received a really good response to the nominations process and all of the tenants that have put themselves forward are strong candidates to be part of the Board. I look forward to seeing tenants across the district now coming forward to vote for their preferred candidate for the Board.”
Now nominations have closed, all tenants across the two areas will soon receive a voting pack to vote for their preferred candidate.
Voting packs will be sent from Monday February 20 with a closing date for votes to be returned by Thursday March 8.
