Unfortunately, the Suffolk Free Press of June 3 carried two articles that contained factual errors of such a magnitude that it is necessary for Babergh to correct them with immediate effect.
These are:
Councillors and staff to park for free – page 3. The article states that ‘Members also voted in favour of banning the introduction of a discount scheme for block booking long-stay car parking places…’.
THIS IS TOTALLY FACTUALLY WRONG. Indeed, there was a recorded vote of those councillors present on this issue and the recommendation of the Strategy Committee to introduce a discounted parking permit scheme WAS APPROVED OVERWHELMINGLY (22 in favour, ten against with two abstentions) as per recommendations (http://www.babergh.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/01D7C450-E3C8-44E2-9EF1-AE427FA3B484/0/K017.pdf)
Cuts heap pressure on district council – page 5. The article refers to ‘debt-ridden Babergh District Council’.
Even as a piece of journalistic shorthand, THIS IS TOTALLY INACCURATE. Babergh – as with every other council in the land – has a major challenge in balancing its books. But this has nothing to do with us carrying debt, rather it is because of reductions in Government grant, the increased cost of providing services, the need to find ongoing efficiencies and savings etc.
Babergh has asked the Suffolk Free Press to make immediate amendments to any online versions of both of these stories and to issue corrections and apologies in next week's print title.
