Many trees are protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). Felling or other removal of such trees or the carrying out of other works to them without the prior consent of the Council is an offence, although there are exceptions relating to trees which are dead, dying or dangerous. Trees growing in Conservation Areas are also protected. Anyone proposing to cut down, top, lop or uproot or wilfully damage or destroy a tree in a Conservation Area is required to give six weeks written Notice of Intent to Babergh District Council before the work is carried out.
