Past projects

Summary

A selection of some of the past arts and community projects in Babergh

2009

Wider Picture Project

In 2008 Babergh's International Film Festival, The Wider Picture Project, brought a wide range of foreign language films to venues large and small across Babergh. Following its success it was decided to expand the Festival in 2009 to include venues in both Babergh and Mid Suffolk districts.

The project aimed to increase the range of films available locally, and to promote understanding of other cultures and lifestyles to a wider audience and during April and May 2009 the best of international film was screened in those communities that do not have their own cinemas.

Villages taking part in the Babergh district were Polstead, Nayland, Tattingstone, Hadleigh, Lavenham, Sproughton, Hartest and The Quay Theatre  Sudbury. A number of educational screenings also took place at Sudbury Upper School and Holbrook High School. Venues taking part in the Mid Suffolk district were Walsham le Willows, The Regal Stowmarket, Stonham Aspall, Wingfield Barns and Screen in the Barn at Thrandeston. All the villages are part of the Suffolk Digital Cinema Network a countywide organisation which assists groups to organise film shows in towns and villages in Suffolk.

BBC Star Brings Music to Babergh’s Ears!

TV choirmaster Gareth Malone swapped the small screen for the classroom again when he took part in a classical music project in Babergh in June 2008.

Gareth - the star of BBC 2's The Choir: Boys Don’t Sing - led a series of classical music   workshops with Babergh schoolchildren, culminating in a spectacular concert alongside the City of London Sinfonia   (CLS) in July.

The project, called Class Creates, was organised by Babergh District Council CLS and Orchestra's Live. It was part of a longer term plan to introduce classical music alive to new rural audiences .

The project involved students from schools in Sudbury who ranged from  4 to 18 years of age. The concert, which took place at Sudbury Upper School and Arts College on July 5th, featured performances from the CLS, Gareth Malone and all the school children who took part in the workshops was a complete sell out.

Anglia Estate Art Project

This community public art project involved residents from the Anglia Estate and local school children in Great Cornard to create words and images for the large stone artworks which are located along a series of pathways in the open space area between Hartest, Minsmere, Raydon and Rede Way. The local residents worked with artist Les Bicknell to create a design to make the space feel safer and easier to use.

Roots Project

This project involved young people in community arts activities enabling them to see their ideas come to life in permanent sculptures. The young people involved gained new skills in carving both in workshops and on site with the tree themselves.

Artist Jeff Higley worked with young people from Sudbury and Great Cornard Upper Schools and Suffolk Youth and Connexions Service to create ideas and designs for the tree. Find out more at Jeff Higley's website

The park and Sudbury area inspired the final designs, which depict recreational activities, images of the river Stour and of the earliest map of Sudbury. For more detailed information about what tree looks like click on the Description of Design (PDF, 15Kb) document.

Local groups who helped to fund the project include, The Community Energy Project, Sudbury Town Council, Sudbury in Bloom, The Sudbury Society and Waitrose. The project is also being supported by Arts Council England, East; Babergh District Council, the crime and disorder reduction partnership and Gainsborough’s House.
