Improving Station Road Sudbury

Updates on improvement works to the Station Road area of Sudbury

We're working local partners in Suffolk to help regenerate and deliver a vision for Sudbury.

Millions have already been invested in improving and extending key facilities - including Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Gainsborough’s House and St. Peter's Cultural & Community Venue.

This next phase will focus on improvement works in the Station Road area.

You can access the two information boards, which are being displayed at the site of our solar carports, via the links below:

During ongoing works, we'll always work hard to minimise any unnecessary disruption.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we deliver our long-term vision for the town.

Information on this webpage will be updated regularly, so please check back for updates.

Project: 40 bay solar carport at Station Road (Kingfisher Leisure Centre) car park

June/July 2022

The solar carport structures and installation is now mostly complete, with the panels already generating electricity.

However, we are experiencing longer than expected delays receiving a specialist part, which is essential for completing the works. The delay is due to global supply chain issues beyond our control and unfortunately, the part is not expected to arrive until early Autumn.

In the meantime, we will be making 24 carport spaces available for use.

Electric vehicle charging points will be switched on as soon as it is safe for us to do so.

April 2022

The majority of the carport structure and PV panels have now been installed.

We're now working to connect the new energy infrastructure with the leisure centre, and carrying out some minor resurfacing works.

February 2022

We begin installing the carports steel structure from mid-February.

January 2022

We begin constructing the main elements of the solar carports on 12 January 2022.

Please note that a large section of the Kingfisher/Station Road car park will be unavailable from this date until construction has been completed to ensure we can work safely.

Signage will be displayed to advise car park users. Alternative parking is available nearby at our Great Eastern Road (Roy's), and railway station car parks, with car parking information available on our website.

December 2021

We are carrying out preliminary works intermittently throughout December.

Groundwork investigations have been completed, and bespoke bases to hold the solar panels are being manufactured.

November 2021

Work starts on site to install a 40 bay solar carport in the central section of the car park at the Kingfisher/Station Road site.

These will generate electricity on site, linking up to battery storage, to provide up to 16.5% of the Kingfisher Leisure Centre’s annual electricity demand. It will also power up to eight new electric vehicle charging points (including two fast charge 22kW points).

Polysolar, the contractor, will work to minimise the loss of parking spaces during construction. However, some temporary disruption is unavoidable whilst these improvement works take place.
