Public information on this webpage will be updated regularly, so please check back for updates.

April 2022

The majority of the carport structure and PV panels have now been installed. The technical work continues to embed the new energy infrastructure with the leisure centre. The work will continue into May 2022 - towards final completion, handover and operation. Some patch and relining works are also planned, in order to improve the surface.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils appreciate the public’s patience whilst some parking bays remain temporarily out of use.

March 2022

As you will have seen the emerging structure of the solar carport is well underway.  Please note that during various times the car park in the Kingfisher/Station Road Car Park will be closed during the works.  Please bear with us during this period, there are additional nearby parking at Roy’s opposite on Great Eastern Road or at the Station (Railway Station), further details of alternative car parks can be found on the Councils webpages.

February 2022

Construction of the solar carport and related infrastructure is underway. The steel structure begins installation from mid-February. It is likely that the completion date will move from the end of March into April. This is due to some unavoidable COVID-19 related supply chain delays.

Once completed, the carport solar arrays will power up to eight new electric vehicle charging points (including two fast charge 22kW points). It will also generate up to 16.5% of the leisure centre’s annual electricity demand.

January 2022

Full construction of the solar carport will start on Wednesday 12 January 2022. Please note that the whole section of the Kingfisher/Station Road site will be closed from this date until construction has been completed. Signage will be displayed to advise car park users.

December 2021

Screw pile anchor site investigations by the subcontractor have been completed. The final baseplate designs are now being manufactured.

Periodic preliminary works will be underway during December. Full construction will start in January 2022.

November 2021

Work will commence on site to install a 40 bay solar carport in the central section of the car park at the Kingfisher/Station Road site.

This will generate electricity on site, linking up to battery storage, to provide some of the energy needs of the leisure centre. Additional electric vehicle charging points will also be installed.

Polysolar, the contractor, will work to minimise the loss of parking spaces during construction. However, some temporary disruption is unavoidable whilst these improvement works take place.
