Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils welcome £100,000 government funding
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have been awarded £100,000, through the Next Steps Accommodation Programme. This is to help cover the costs of commercial hotels needed to provide accommodation and support during the colder weather.
The funding has been awarded as part of the government’s commitment to end rough sleeping for good.
Cllr Jan Osborne, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for housing, said:
“This is wonderful news for the district. This additional funding will ensure that we will be able to offer short-term accommodation for the most vulnerable over the winter period. It reduces the financial impact of using commercial accommodation and supports our efforts to help keep people off the streets, particularly during cold winter nights.”
Cllr Julie Flatman, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for housing and communities, said:
“This is fantastic news and a real achievement for the councils. This additional funding will go some way to reduce the financial burden on public money and ensure that our residents have a safe and secure place to sleep during the winter nights.
“Our Housing Solutions team have worked hard to put the bid together and this is a testimony to the work they have contributed to this application. Well done to everyone involved.”
This additional funding will support the councils' objective to end homelessness and prevent residents from finding themselves in difficulty which can potentially lead to rough sleeping.
