Mid Suffolk District Council’s Cabinet has given the go-ahead for a planning application to be drawn up to develop 99 new homes at the site of their former offices in Needham Market.
After reviewing all the options, the Cabinet has directed Mid Suffolk’s Strategic Director, with responsibility for Assets and Investments, to begin work on drawing up a planning application for a mixed use residential and retail application. The proposals will see an application for up to 99 new homes, consisting of both houses and apartments, and a single retail unit submitted later this year.
At a meeting of the council’s Cabinet today, Monday 9 July, councillors considered the options for the future of the former Mid Suffolk District Council offices at 131 High Street, Needham Market. The Cabinet reviewed several proposals for the site, as well as feedback from residents gathered at exhibitions held earlier this year.
The proposals include public car parking, cycle storage and waste management facilities, while maintaining memorial trees and historic walls on the site, which covers both the former Mid Suffolk offices and the car park south of Hurstlea Road. The listed building which sits on Needham Market High Street would be retained, with a number of apartments built within.
Cllr Nick Gowrley, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council and Cabinet Member for Assets and Investments, said: “We’ve been working hard to draw up the best possible plan for this site, and have spoken in depth with local members, the town council and the community. As a result of this work, we can now confidently put forward these proposals as the best way to secure the future of the site: by providing new housing and retail units with easy access to the High Street, these plans will bring new customers and opportunities to existing businesses within Needham while also providing much needed homes in one of our well connected and flourishing market towns.”
