Council steps in to tackle issues at derelict site

Mid Suffolk District Council has stepped in to install CCTV to deter anti-social behaviour at the derelict Fisons site in Bramford – but says the owners should do more.

The former Fisons factory, in Paper Mill Lane, has seen a number of serious fires and vandalism over many years.

The site owners, Paper Mill Lane Properties, are responsible for its security.

However, after repeated cases of anti-social behaviour and ongoing community concerns, Mid Suffolk District Council has taken action to provide additional security - funding mobile CCTV cameras – while exploring further options to compel owners to improve safety and security.

Councillor Andrew Stringer, cabinet member for heritage planning and infrastructure, said: “We share the community’s frustration at ongoing anti-social behaviour on the site.

“To be clear, the site security is the owner’s responsibility, and we believe they should be doing more. But Mid Suffolk District Council is so concerned at the potential for somebody to get hurt that we have stepped in to fund some mobile CCTV cameras.”

The council is continuing to explore further options to compel the owners to take additional action to secure the area.

The former Fisons site comprises the remains of a Victorian-era industrial complex, largely destroyed by fire.

The site now contains remnant structural elements, some potentially unstable and hazardous including derelict industrial buildings, offices and ancillary structures. There is significant litter, waste accumulation and evidence of fly-tipping.

No maintenance or development activity has occurred on the site for many years.

Cllr Stringer said: “A huge amount of officer effort and time has gone into trying to restore the site and ensure public safety.

“It is a shame the original planning permission for the redevelopment of this site was allowed to lapse by the owners. Like everyone in the community, we want to see its future resolved as soon as possible, and we will continue to try to work with the owners and potential developers to make that happen.”
