New Babergh Chair pledges support for charity close to his heart

03/06/26
The new Chair of Babergh District Council will be supporting a cause ‘close to his heart’.

Cllr Lee Parker, Liberal Democrat member for Assington ward, was elected as the new council Chair at Babergh Annual Council meeting held on 12 May 2026.

Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Independent member for Long Melford, was elected to serve as Vice Chair.

Cllr Lee Parker’s chosen charity is Sudbury Defibrillators, a charity who launched a mission to ensure nobody in Sudbury is more than 2 minutes away from their nearest defibrillator.
Cllr Lee Parker, Chair of Babergh District Council, said:

“If you’ll excuse the pun, this charity is extremely close to my heart and I am really pleased to be able to spend the next year fundraising for such an important charity.

Most of us will unfortunately know of someone who has experience some type of cardiac issue and when it comes to needing defibrillation while out and about, it really can be the difference between life and death.

Defibrillators are such important pieces of medical kit and while we hope that you will never need to use one, the aim for Sudbury is that should you be in the position where you do, it’s never too far away.

I look forward to seeing how much money we are able to raise over the next year and I just know it will go such a long way in helping this charity.”

Andy Read, Chairman of Sudbury Defibrillators said

“Our aim is to have everyone in the town within two minutes of a publicly available defibrillator.

We guide and lead the campaign in Sudbury through stages including purchasing and installing, training and education and have a special emphasis on maintenance and sustainability to ensure longevity.”
