Council partners with EEZYBIKE to launch new electric bikes in Sudbury

Two new electric bikes can now be hired in Sudbury thanks to a new partnership between the council and Suffolk-based electric bike company EEZYBIKE

From May this year, residents and visitors in Sudbury can hire an electric bike to make their journeys more environmentally friendly.

Two new electric bikes have been located by Kingfisher Leisure Centre, within walking distance of Sudbury train station and just steps from the Gainsborough Trail (what3words location: comic.unfilled.tastings).

Situated within a solar-powered pod, the bikes make for an exciting new way to enjoy the local cycle routes and surrounding area.

Their aim is to help promote active travel, reduce local carbon emissions, and benefit the health and wellbeing of those who use them.

Especially, with road vehicles contributing to 96% of transport emissions in the East of England in 2018*.

They are thanks to a new partnership between Babergh District Council, via the Babergh sustainable travel working group, and EEZYBIKE, a Suffolk-based electric bike provider.

It is the second installation in the Babergh and Mid Suffolk area, with Mid Suffolk District Council also partnering with EEZYBIKE in 2024 at their Needham Lake site.

These bikes have already proved popular there, with the response from the community over the past year being overwhelmingly positive.

Rider’s have praised the e-bike initiative’s convenience, ease of use, and environmental benefits, with consistent 5-star ratings on TripAdvisor.

Si Cooper, EEZYBIKE founder, said:
“We are delighted to be helping Babergh District Council implement its vision for active and sustainable travel.
"May was the hottest May on record, made five times more likely by climate change.
"Our e-bikes help the public reduce their emissions, provide health benefits and can help encourage modal shift.
"EEZYBIKE is proud to have won several awards for our e-bike innovation, and are thrilled to be a part of this movement toward a greener, healthier future.
"We look forward to expanding our collaboration with councils and communities across the UK.”

Cllr Helen Davies, cabinet member for climate change, nature recovery and biodiversity at Babergh District Council, said:
“This new EEZYBIKE pod in Sudbury is a great addition for the town – helping to encourage more environmentally friendly travel options for both residents and visitors alike.
"E-bikes can be quite a considerable investment to buy up front. So, by the council subsidising the rental costs, you can give it a try and see if it’s something you’re interested in first.
"I would encourage everyone to give them a go and experience the health and carbon benefits that cycling can bring.”

To book the bikes for either a half day or full day, riders simply need to head to the EEZYBIKE website and select their preferred date and time.

They will then receive a unique code to enter into the keypad on the pod to retrieve the bikes, and return them at the end of their booking.
