Pin Mill management changes

We've resumed management responsibility for a key part of Pin Mill

Babergh District Council has resumed management responsibility for a key part of Pin Mill, on the banks of the River Orwell.

Since 2010, the Pin Mill Bay Management Community Interest Company (CIC) has managed and maintained the Hard on behalf of the district council.

However, the volunteer-run CIC has chosen to wind up, meaning the council once again has responsibility for the area.

Cllr Daniel Potter, Babergh’s portfolio holder for the environment, said:

"We would like to place on record our thanks and appreciation to the volunteers who have supported the CIC through the years and worked hard to deliver a useful asset for people on the river.

The council will be looking at what improvements can be made to the area in due course.

Directors of the CIC have said volunteers worked tirelessly to make a positive impact on the area, but now was the right time to voluntarily dissolve the group.

In line with strict rules set by the CIC regulator, any remaining assets must be transferred to another approved organisation which meets the regulator’s specific requirements.

In this case, the regulator has approved the transfer to The Bread and Roses CIC, which is currently restoring Thames Sailing Barge, the May - once part of the Pin Mill landscape.

It is a female-led project to create a floating bakery to support women who have suffered trauma. The barge is currently being restored in St Osyth, and there are plans for it to make visits to Pin Mill.
