Wheelchair accessible vehicles

Under the Equality Act 2010, drivers of wheelchair accessible vehicles have a legal duty to:

  • transport wheelchair users in their wheelchair
  • charge wheelchair users the same fare as non-wheelchair user passengers
  • help the passenger with mobility assistance, as reasonably required (for example, loading the wheelchair into the vehicle, should the passenger not wish to travel in it)

Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers who refuse to transport wheelchair users - or attempt to charge them more - face a fine of up to £1,000.

Exemption from duties (for drivers)

Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers are able to apply for an exemption from their duties toward wheelchair user passengers, should they need to (for example, for medical reasons).

Please email licensingteam@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk to request the relevant application form.

Other Wheelchair Accessible transport options

Local community transport services are designed to cater to individuals with limited mobility, providing specially adapted vehicles that ensure comfort and accessibility.

These services are essential for attending medical appointments, social engagements, and other important activities, when public transport is not available or accessible.
