What is graffiti?
Graffiti is writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched or sprayed illicitly on the surface of any property. It is an act of vandalism, which is a criminal offence under the Criminal Damage Act 1971.
It carries a large fine, or even imprisonment. For minor incidents, an £80 on the spot fine may be issued.
Report graffiti
Graffiti removal is a responsibility that lies with the owner of the property.
If your property has been defaced with graffiti then - depending on its severity - you should report this to the police as an incident of criminal damage or antisocial behaviour.
The police can often recognise local tags (signatures used by graffiti artists) and will likely need a photograph of the graffiti, before it's removed.
The only graffiti that we are responsible for removing is graffiti on our own property. However, if the graffiti is offensive then we can work with property owners to remove it quickly. Many parish councils also own graffiti removal kits, which their residents can use.
